Fan Death

Not the death of a concertgoer.  Not the failure of a home cooling device.  It's something in between:

Fan death is a widely held belief in South Korea that an electric fan left running overnight in a closed room can cause the death of those sleeping inside.
South Korea.  Highly educated, technologically advanced, economically powerful, and home to the belief that your electric fan could kill you.  I love the apparent contradictions you find in Asia.  The explosive growth of their economies, standards of living, and education levels has totally outpaced the extinction of their popular mythology.   The result is a number of Asian countries caught in a curious transition stage, in which the superstitions of the older generation exist alongside the rationally-informed beliefs of a new generation of college-educated students.

Perhaps the greatest irony in all of this is that if South Koreans have anything to fear, it's actually their new generation of electronic devices.  Speaking of explosive growth.  #phonedeath
